Toreros

For some time I have seen more and more protests against bullfighting in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. Like many actions to protect animals (except animals in the cities), these are made up of people have no idea what a bullfight (and organizers are making very good money on it, but that did not quite is known: P). Do not get me wrong, I’m totally against free violence against animals and here I mean the pure pleasure of making a living being to suffer (as I said a month ago some neighborhood children hanged two young puppies ).

From discussions I had with some people, I realized that many people simply do not know what this bullfight mean and worse, what this means  (many are scared by a dog of 20 kg). For this reason a detailed explaination is  on the lines below that and how and what to bullfighting.

Cow BullShort description of a bull: the bull is hoofed, Bos taurus, weighing between 400 and 800 kg. Height at the withers is between 150 cm to 170 cm. Speed attainable in flight is about 40 km / h, and the impact force is about 395 Newtons, which is similar to an average car when it hits you, being able to throw a man of 100 kg to over 3 meters air, about the length of 20 meters, just  that the bull accelerates more quickly, and thus the impact force  goes well over 400 newtons. Bulls are usually very territorial and aggressive, it can be seen not only in cows, you can see the buffalo, bison, buffalo. They are very resistant to pain, so they are very dangerous, very difficult for start-up broke aggressive (enough amateur African safaris were killed by African Buffalo especialy they shot the bull).

Short history of bullfighting: the first physical evidence of bullfighting are from Crete (Minoan civilization) and  throughout Europe (ancient cave paintings and different scripts). There is even a Celtic tribe called Taurisci and they were wearing horns of bulls on their battle helmets. Unlike our times, when there is no initial inititiation for young people, then, one of the initiation rites of young people was “fighting” with a bull. This battle represented the victory of man over the elements, the elements that makes the beast. Crete was a kind of stunt fighting initiative consisting mustly by the  challenge and confront a bull without any weapons or armor, just to survive. In many parts of Europe they were bringing the bull to miximum angry, so that it was more chalenging to face him.

These tribes have chosen as a symbol / totem bull  because of the great strength and vitality, so itpassed to their tribal members  and they had enormous respect for it (as well as other animal-totem: wolf, bear, lion, eagle, owl , snake, etc.). The only populations that have passed the initiation rites were Iberian tribes that have survived, including Arab califates (Arab califats centuries ago were much more tolerant than the current ones).Minoans and other European tribes who practiced this ritual were either destroyed by the Romans, or by the tribes invading from the east (which would move with the horse totem: P).

Bullfighting is divided into two categories: foot or riding (mainly in Portugal).

At present, obviously there is no longer need for the initiation of young people :D  ( they are born directly men and women, right?: D), and bullfightings are just for the show. Well, some young people who were never  in their life in the country, and think that all animals are cats and dogs, who think that family is obsolete, ask the banning of bullfighting, for the reason that the “poor” bull is suffering,  and that he would be better “otherway”, and it does not have fair chances against a man (yeah, a 800 kg of a bull is inferior to a man of 70 kg man armed with a javelin ). ”Otherwise” means that a lot of bulls are castrated at birth and becomes oxen, and a higher percentage are becoming meat for slaughterhouse (the percentage of births of bulls is  somewhere between 10 and 20% of total). It would be interesting campaign “Adopt a bull today.” :)

What is not known is that many bulls are aborted or that manu  reach the slaughterhouse,  simply because is not productive (oxes or bulles are no longer used in agriculture, to plaw, etc),so  you better have a bull for ten farms that produce milk (milk and yogurt for many of us). Apart from that those thatconsume the bull sperm. : P  Good, ban bullfighting, because some can not stand blood (I do not watch soap operas, do not listen to maneles, but I do not ask for their banning), but what will happen with the bulls? Well, banning of bullfighting will lead to a decline in quality of cattle, the disappearance of a culture, and many bulls aborted. And some young people without purpose in life will feel accoplished to have “saved” the bulls (this generation, because there will be a much smaller next generation). And who will go to  save other animals/stuffs (in Europe the regulations are so strict that probably soon we would be requiered to  die “organic” and “bio”).

I have great respect for the toreadores for having the courage to face a beast of over 600kg / f, with only a spear in hand 7 cm long  (bullfighter spears are made so that does not penetrate more de7 cm, are actually a kind of harpoons, a metal tip with a rope tied to wooden poles). When I was 10-12 years old, I was taken on horns of a ram (probably at about 30kg) and was throun in the air like nothing. I respect the animals for the force they have.

Another aspect is lost sight of, the relationship between man and animal. I do not think there is in the whole world more respect than the respect of a toreador and a bull.

So,  I’m against the ban bullfights for the reason that fighting is not equal or the bulls suffers. To be an equal fight, the man would need a gun. High caliber. Or two guns. : D And for those who demand the prohibition of these battles (not sports, not shows, they are rituals) they don’t have the minimum idea what bullfighting is, but hey, it’s fashionable to defend all sorts of animals.

Torreros Ole!

Below is my favorite style of fighting, bullfighting on horseback, the Horse and Man are one being (how much skilled can you be and in touch with your horse that you can be able to pat the bull 3 times on the forehead – this means that the bull fought well and deserves the right to live, he will live and can have offspring):

P.S. Some people wish for the torreros to be honed by the bulls. Probably it won’t be long until they wish for people to be butchered for some other idiot reasons. I guess they have some serious mental illness.

“Daily Bicycle” is turning Sibiu in the Capital of Bycicles

The “Bicicleta Zilnica” Project ( the Daily Bicycle ), funded by “Raiffeisen Community“, is advancing with quick steps. Below is a map with most of the locations to place the racks for bicycles.  Not the locations are on the map, but all of them were ”visited” and photographed.

Note that most are outside the historical City Center, because there are already racks and we focused on areas where they are not, and they are adjacent to bicycle trails. Like I said, the map locations are marked in 60%,  but soon we will put the rest, including pictures. If there are places where a rack would be good and we do not put it on the map, leave a comment. In fact, we look forward to your proposals. :D

And another thing: I, Bebe & Tudor thank to Simina for designing the logo of  ”Bicicleta Zilnica”.

This week I have to choose

So, two concerts will be held this week in Sibiu, in the same day ( December 1st ), different locations.

Alexandrina Hristov‘s first concert on 1st December, Oldies Pub in the center, 22.00 hours (entry 30 lei, tickets are sold on site only).

Alexandrina is an artist (painter, singer) from Republic of  Moldova, who now lives in Bucharest and is delighting us with paintings and especially me, with great music. The second concert on December 1 is the concert of the “Grimus“, at the Music Pub,  20.30 hours, which is also the album release, ”Egretta”. Entry is 10 lei, and as was the last time they played in Sibiu, will be a great afterparty. The goys are from Cluj, they have 5-6 years of activity. Below is a song of their own, to give you an opinion.

So,  where to go? :D P.S. I am thinking to go to both. I Need a clone .. thou …

P.S. 2 Cemerita.ro is throwing out 5 tickets for two at the Grimus concert. Check it out!

Astra Film Fest 2011 – Sibiu

One of the oldest and greatest documentary films festival in Romania, “Astra Film Festival” started on 25 october and ended on the 30th october.

The festival brings together al genre of documentary, anthropological, investigative, direct cinema, observational, etc. Taking place every two years, it brings together directors, profesors of visual arts, investigation journalists and, most important, the public. They have the oportunity to talk with directors/producers of the movies they saw, and interact in an very informal way.

In my next posts I will show you same of my favourites movies that were screened this year.

For starting, the movie ” Off the beaten tracks ” by Dieter Auner present the life of a peasant family in Northern Transilvania, Maramures. They are also shepards, in a changing world after Romania joined the EU. The family, Albin, is split between the men, that care for the sheep herds in the traditional way, and women, that go in the summer to work in Germany to earn extra money.

It is not a sad movie, the dialogs, the situations are half serious, half amusing, as the Albin family takes one day at a time when dealing with their life.

The movie is full version, 86 minutes, and it has English subtitles.

For the ones of you that didn’t heared of him, he is a nigerian painter, writer, english teacher and friend that lives in Bucharest for the last 6 years. His name is Kingsley. Here is him, talking at the TEDx Cluj:

Today, Critical Mass!

I hope there will be at least 1000 cycling lovers, to be also an aniversary number. :D

And “Happy Birthday!”.

P.S. The tandem and monocycles also welcome. :)

This week-end Sibiu will host three interesting events: the most important is the

The second event is an invite to the official opening of the restauration project

Sibiu Journeymen - foto Radio Romania Actualitati

developed by the Traveling Journeymen in Sibiu. They wish to invite this evening starting with 19 hours on Cetatii street for a chat about their work in Sibiu in an relaxed atmosphere.

The 3rd event is the first selection for the festival Imagine Romania. 17 troups will perform in Oldies Pub, starting 18 o’clock.

Elements

I love theatre. I have only one preference: a classic theatre play should be played in a classic enviroment. Any other unconvetional piece should be elsewhere. This evening I enjoyed the “Elements”, directed by Bogdan Saratean, in the Teracota restaurant opening event ( Dobrun Street, Sibiu ).

I cannot say I liked it, but definitely I want to see this play at least once.
